Elkader Register, Thur., 08 July 1920. Strawberry Point column.
Last Thursday afternoon Chas. Opperman met with a terrible accident which cost him his life. He was busily engaged at his home on Commercial Street in sawing lumber and a slab was left near the saw. The saw caught up the piece of timber and struck Mr. Opperman.
Dr. F. H. and Tom Howard were summoned and found his back broken and several ribs crushed. He lived only a short time.
He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Maym Opperman and three children Pauline, Carl and Earl. He also leaves six brothers and one sister, George, Henry and Ernest of this place, Dave of Allison, Herman of Cedar Rapids, and August of Aberdeen, S.D., and Mrs. Frank Allenstein, of near Lamont.
Funeral services occurred Sunday forenoon at the Lutheran church conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. Fritschel and it was one of the largest funerals ever held here. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved wife and children.
