John Paul Ryan
John Paul Ryan, 70, Monona, Iowa died Friday, May 10, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was born on May 19, 1942, to Emmet and Kathrine “Stella” (Keenan) Ryan in Waukon, Iowa. John attended St. Patrick Catholic Grade School and graduated from Monona High School in 1960. Following graduation, John spent a short time working in Cedar Rapids.
John was drafted into the Army in 1964, where he served in the Vietnam War in the 1st Division and was honorably discharged in 1966. John then worked in Chicago, IL, for a brief time. He was united in marriage with Marilyn Connor on June 1, 1967, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union, Shaun and Patrick.
John worked for local banks in Luana and Postville and Union State Bank in Monona, Iowa, until his retirement. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan and enjoyed traveling, which included 6 of the 7 continents. He loved spending time with his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his 2 sons, Shaun (Amy) Ryan of West Burlington and Patrick (Jennifer) Ryan of Kalona; five grandchildren, Meghan, Shelby and Erin Ryan and Ashley and Connor Ryan; a sister, Ethna Bartels of Schaumberg, Illinois and a sister-in-law, Kay Ryan of Glendora, California.
John was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Alan and Larry Ryan; a sister, Kathrine O’Hara and a brother-in-law, Conrad Bartels.
A public visitation will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2013, from 2 - 8 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa.
A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona, Iowa.
Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.
Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa is helping the family with the arrangements.
