Death of William Thiese
Guttenberg Press April 15, 1915

On Wednesday afternoon, April 14, 1915, at four o'clock at his home on Pleasant Ridge occurred the death of Wm. Thiese, the cause of death being old age. Deceased was born in the Providence Hanover, Schnern, Germany, on April 1, 1835, and therefore was 80 years and 12 days of age at the time of his death. In the year 1865 he came to the United States, settling in Clayton County, Iowa, where he lived until his death. He was married two times, his first wife preceding him in death many years ago. Two sons also preceded him in death, Henry and Louis. For three years his occupation was carpenter, afterwards being successfully engaged in farming. He was a kind and true husband, father, and friend, and also was an ambitious man during his entire life, and therefore was held in high regard by all who knew him. His death is deeply mourned by his wife, seven sons (William, of Mitchell, S.D., August, of Alexandria, S.D., Ferdinand, Herman, Fred, Otto and George, of Guttenberg), three daughters (Mrs John Biederman of Guttenberg, Mrs. Fred Miller, of Clayton, and Mrs. Ed Bergman, Jr., of Rockwell, Iowa) 36 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 1 brother (August Thiese, of Guttenberg) and faithful members of St. John's Luthern Church in this city on Sunday afternoon, and interment will be made in the City Cemetery. Rev. Janzig, of St. John's Lutheran Chuch will conduct funeral services. In the death of Mr. Thiese Clayton County and this community loses one of its most trustworthy citizens and pioneer residents.
