Suicide
On Wednesday afternoon of last week our citizens were started to learn that Carl Kramer had
committed suicide by hanging himself in the barn of his nephew, Anton Kramer.Deceased was a native of Austria, where he was born October 4th, 1823, consequently he was nearly 67 years of age. He came to the United States in the spring of 1874, and shortly afterward came to Elkader, since which time he has made his home with Anton Kramer. In 1876 he had the misfortune to be thrown from a runaway team, breaking an arm and leg. These injuries never entirely healed, and he has been a continuous sufferer for many years, and frequently expressed the wish that he might die. It is through that his sufferings unbalanced his mind, and that he committed the rash act
while suffering from such mental depressionCoroner Kriebs held an inquest on Thursday and the jury brought in a verdict substantially in
accordance with the above. The funeral took place Thursday after from A. Kramer’s residence, W. B. Smith officiating, after
which his remains were laid to rest in the East side cemetery.source: Clayton County Register/Journal, 26 Jun 1890
