John J. (Jackson) Carpenter was born in Lycoming County, Pa., May 1, 1824 and died at
the home of his son Alexander on Cox Creek, Clayton County, Nov 10, 1893. He was married to
Mary F. Marshall, Dec 22, 1842. They with four children moved to Clayton County Iowa in 1854.
Since then three children were born.In July 1862 he enlisted in Co B, 21st Iowa Infantry Volunteers. He served faithfully for three years.
After his discharge he came back to his farm at Cox Creek where he resided until 1894. They then
moved to Strawberry Point where they resided seven years. Since 1902 they have resided with their son amongst their old neighbors and here most of his life work was done. And now the great
Commander has mustered him into the ranks of the Celestial army.He was buried from his son’s home on Nov 11, 1903. The funeral was conducted by his Comrades
of the G.A.R. He leaves a wife of his youth, manhood and old age, and six children to mourn his
death. He was universally loved and honored by all with whom he associated. Enemies “none”;
friends “all”. A large concourse of friends and neighbors followed him with sorrow to the silent tomb.Resolutions of Respect. Strawberry Point, Iowa, 12 Nov 1903: At a regular meeting of Henry
Howard Post No. 259, Grand Army of the Republic, held 10 Nov 1903, this action was taken: On
motion and by unanimous vote, as many members as could and would, were urged to attend the
funeral service of Comrade John J. Carpenter and assist in conducting the same, and to give “Uncle
Jack” a soldier burial.A committee consisting of Comrades Barnes, Hanson and Treadwell was selected to draft
resolutions, same to be published in the MAIL PR SS. The committee says: By the death of
Comrade Carpenter, a member of Co. B, 21st Iowa Inf. Volunteers, of the War of the Rebellion,
Henry Howard Post...Living, Loyal and respected, served three years in the same respects...

The newspaper date for this obit is incorrect, J.J. Carpenter died Nov. 1903, not in 1893. The dates on his gravestone in Ross cemetery are very clear.________________________________________

At the home of his son in Cox Creek twp., Tuesday evening occurred the death of J. J. Carpenter, aged about 78 years. Mr. Carpenter was an old soldier, a member of Co. B, 21st Iowa. He has been in poor health for the past few years. The funeral was held yesterday morning under the auspices of the G.A.R. post of Strawberry Point, of which he was a member.
