Hallie K. Scarff

Hallie K. Scarff, age 14, of rural McGregor, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 26, 1999 as the result of a traffic accident. She was born January 22, 1985 in Waukon, Iowa, daughter of Frank Scarff and Kathleen (Smolke) Hendricks. She attended Cora B. Darling Elementary School in Postville and was currently in her freshman year at MFL Mar-Mac Community High School. She participated in track and field, was an avid animal lover, and a good "people person". She was recently confirmed at the Postville Community Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her father, Frank Scarff of West Union, Iowa, her mother Kathleen Hendricks and step-father Mike Trudo, both of McGregor, Iowa, 2 half sisters Mattie and Maggie Scarff, both of West Union, her paternal grandmother Sally B. Scarff of Marquette, Iowa, and maternal grandfather Alvis Smolke of Prairie du Chien, WI. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather Paul Scarff, Sr. and maternal grandmother Esther Smolke.

Funeral services were Saturday, October 30, 1999 at Giard United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Gilbert and Rev. Gary Catterson officiating, with burial in the Giard Cemetery. Hallie believed that the organ and tissue donation program was very worthwhile. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to this program in her name.

FIVE AREA TEENAGERS DIE IN FIERY CRASH EAST OF MONONA LAST WEEK

Five area teens were killed in a fiery car-truck crash on county road B-45 outside of Monona Tuesday evening.

According to the Iowa highway Patrol Nathan Meyer, 18, of St. Olaf was driving the car that hit the back of a straight truck carrying grain about four miles east of Monona. The car burst into flames, killing the driver and four passengers instantly. The truck was driven by James Tayek, 55, rural McGregor. Tayek received no physical injuries.

Others who died in the crash were Travis Rubendahl, 18, Monona; Jennifer Reed, 16 of McGregor; HALLIE K. SCARFF, 14, of McGregor and Logan Glawe, 15, of St. Olaf.

Reed and Scarff attended MFL MarMac High School; Meyer and Glawe attended Central Community High School in Elkader and Rubendahl (sic) attended the Alternative High School in Elkader. Scarff had attended Cora B. Darling Elementary and Middle School in Postville prior to moving to rural McGregor. Rubendahl had also been a former Postville resident who had attended Postville schools.

Investigation into the accident is continuing.
