Charles H. Haefner, who died May 27 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Wellemeyer, Garner, Iowa, was born in Germany, February 8, 1838, and at the time of his death was past 91 years of age.
In 1855, with his brother, he came to the U.S., landing in New York, after being 33 days on a sailing vessel. Coming west to Dubuque county, they made their home with an uncle.
In 1859 he was united in marriage to Mary Harney, who preceded him in death in 1921. In 1862 Mr. Haefner came to Giard and opend a blacksmith shop which he conducted for fifty years.
Mr. Haefner was of the type of pioneer now fast disappearing - a man honest in all his transactions with his fellow men, a man who will be long remembered for his sterling qualities.
Mr. Haefner became a member of the M.E. church in 1857, and during his long an duseful life has always been constant in its teachings.
Four children remain to mourn his death - L.H. of Bainville, Montana; W.H. of Castalia; Mrs. Wellemeyer of Garner; Miss Tillie at the Giard home; also 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday p.m. conducted by Rev. Menzer and Rev. Wolff. Interment was in Giard cemetery.
