Selma Schierholz

Funeral services for Mrs. Milton Schierholz were held Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. James Allison officiated. Casket bearers were Stanley, David and Paul Schierholz and Peter Keune. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Sellma Elena (Nelson) Schierholz, the daughter of Christian and Cena (Olson) Nelson, was born September 20, 1917, in Clermont, Iowa. She passed away Friday, January 11, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 84 years, 3 months and 21 days.

She was baptized September 20, 1917 at home by a lay person. Her twin brother died at birth. Selma was confirmed in Norwegian by the Rev. Gustav Gunsten at the East Clermont Lutheran Church. She attended the country school near her home and then the Elgin School. Selma took care of her grandmother and then worked as a housekeeper until she was married.

On September 17, 1936 she was married to Milton Schierholz at the parsonage of the West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont. To this union 3 sons and a daughter were born. The family farmed for over 30 years and then moved to Postville.

Selma worked in a cafe for several years and then took care of a woman in her home for 5 years before retiring.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister: Myrtle Howard; 3 brothers who died at birth; 7 half-brothers: Elliott, Martin, Carl, Oscar, Harry, Louis and Nelvin Nelson; 2 half-sisters: Anna McShane and Mena Orth.

Surviving is her husband, Milton, 4 children: Stanley (Joann) Schierholz, Warsaw, MO, David (Linda) Schierholz, Postville, Paul (Linda) Schierholz, Colorado Springs, CO, and Carol (Peter) Keune, Gunder, IA.

Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter. The grandchildren are: Mechel (Rick) Mitts, Larnel (David) Lantsberger, Mark (Roni) Schierholz, Patrick Schierholz; Jodi Schierholz, Peggy Schierholz, Kevin (Carolina) Schierholz, Jason Schierholz; Kristy (Steve) Barron; Elizabeth Schierholz, Patricia Schierholz, Stephanie Schierholz, Ryan Schierholz, Andrew Schierholz, Thomas Schierholz; Jamie Keune, Lindsey Keune. The great grandchildren include: Uriah (Tamesha) Mitts, Rechel Mitts, Justin Mitts, Chad Lantsberger, Brianna Lantsberger, Brice Lantsberger, Katey Lantsberger, Samantha Schierholz, Kaitlyn Schierholz, Kirsten Schierholz; Rita Barron, Judy Barron, Joey Barron, Hunter Schierholz-Riley; and 1 great great granddaughter, Tamiah Mitts.

Also surviving is a sister, Clara Blessum of Arlington, Iowa.

Selma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA.
