Robert Bugenhagen

Funeral services for Robert Bugenhagen were held Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at 3 p.m. in St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa. The Rev. Christopher Staley officiated. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Robert Lavern Bugenhagen, the son of Walter and Florence (Genz) Bugenhagen, was born September 2, 1930, in Clayton County near Monona, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. He had reached the age of 70 years, 5 months, and 13 days.

He was baptized Sept. 21, 1930, by the Rev. Kumpf and confirmed July 1, 1945, by the Rev. Adix, both in St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. Bobby received his education in the West Grove School and was graduated from Luana High School in 1949.

Bob lived all of his life in the Luana area. He was employed at Monona Wire for 20 years. He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, had served on the church Council and was presently working as the custodian.

Bob had devoted most of his life in service to the Boy Scouts of America. In 1994 he attained the highest honor given in that organization, the Silver Beaver Award. He served as the local Assistant Scout Master in 1977 and became Scout Master in 1980 serving in that capacity for 15 years. Other awards were the Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow; and in 1990 became the order of the Arrow Lodge Advisor. For 10 years he was on the Eagle Review Committee and also served as a summer camp counselor for a number of years. Bob attended 3 trips to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

Bob's other interests were in family history and the history of the town of Luana. He spent time collecting family photographs and attended meetings of the Postville Historical Society. He loved Native American History and stories of the "Old West" and pioneer days.

He is survived by a brother, Donald Bugenhagen of Luana, Iowa; a sister, Joan (Norman) Sedlmayr of Bagley, Wisconsin; an aunt, Irene Harnack of McGregor, Iowa; 6 nephews and nieces: Craig, Kevin, and Kyle Bugenhagen, Dan (Carol) Sass, Debra (David) Fox and Denise (Pat) Walker; 5 great nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Casket bearers were Craig, Kyle and Kevin Bugenhagen, Dan Sass, David Fox and Pat Walker.
