Gilbert F. "Bud" Peglow, 90, of Deltona, Fla., formerly of Monona, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Orange City, Fla. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at Garden City United Methodist Church in Monona. Burial: Monona City Cemetery, with military honors.
He is survived by his children, Pam of Deltona, Fla., Steve of Alexandria, Va., and John of Cedar Rapids; daughters-in law, Mona and Julie; five grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica (Rick), John, Sarah and Rachel; and one great-grandson, Nicolas.
Bud was born June 30, 1918, in Postville, to Fredrick and Fay Peglow. He grew up in Monona, where he graduated from high school, class of 1935. Bud continued his education at Grinnell College, where he received his degree in pre-law and accounting.
Following his graduation from college, he proudly enlisted in the Navy and faithfully served his country in World War II from 1941-1946 as a torpedo bomber pilot and earned many commendations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal, with nine oak leaf clusters and the Legion of Merit. He achieved the rank of lieutenant commander and the great respect of the many men he served with.
While in the Navy, he met and married Jacquelyn McWin, Miss Virginia 1941, in November 1944. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, they moved to Monona and became partners in the family Ford dealership business, Peglow Motor Co., started by his father in 1915. He eventually took over the business, selling it in 1978 and retiring to Florida with Jackie.
While in Monona, Bud was involved in many community improvement projects and was instrumental in founding the Monona Municipal Airport and the Monona Swimming Pool. He was active in Kiwanis, American Legion, Monona Commercial Club and the Tri City Golf Course.
Bud dearly loved flying, fishing, golfing and all life had to offer. He contributed much to those with whom he came in contact and was an eternal optimist, full of hope and the will to live. He is greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Jacquelyn, who passed in May 2001.
