ARBIE CARL LUDWIG SCHROEDER
Arbie Carl Ludwig Schroeder was born Feb. 28, 1890 in Clermont Township in Fayette County, Iowa, to Carl and Bertha (Meyer) Schroeder. He died early Tuesday morning, July 27, 1993 at his home in Elgin. He was 84.
He attended school at Postville until the 10th grade, when he assumed the responsibility of running the family farm after his father's death. He married Lillian Jacob on Dec. 28, 1937 at the First Baptist Church of Elgin. They continued running the family dairy farm until their retirement in 1974. After retirement, they maintained residence in Elgin.
Arbie was active in promoting and improving the Holstein dairy breed. He was one of the first farmers in northeast Iowa to own purebred Holstein cattle and was an initial member in the Iowa Holstein Association. He also worked to establish the 4-H program in Fayette County, serving as club leader for 15 years. He served on the Postville Creamery Board, the board of the Big Four Fair, and was active in promoting membership in the Farm Bureau. After retirement, he was involved in establishing the regional "Blue Ribbon" dairy cattle show. His other loves included his family, friends, sports and fishing. One of his fondest memories was having played on a 13 member high school football team that was unscored on and undefeated.
Arbie is survived by his wife, Lillian; a brother, Paul Schroeder, St. Loius Park, Minn; a sister, Ora Windhurst, Postville; a daughter, Karen (and Al) Steward, West Union; a son Ken (and Ruthie) Schroeder, Wheaton, Ill; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Vernon and Harold, and his parents.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 30, 1993 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, Iowa, the Rev. Jon Cooke officiating. Burial was in the Elgin Cemetery. Casket bearers were Robert Jacob, Kevin Stewart, Craig Stewart, Keith Stewart, Emily Schroeder, Larin Stewart and Stanley Hackman.
