Lucille Lois (McNally) Cochrane, 89, West Union, Iowa, died Thursday, September 29, 2011, at Traditions in West Union, Iowa. She was born April 27, 1922, at Luana, IA, the daughter of Lewis and Clara McNally of Grand Meadow Township.
Lucille graduated from Postville High School and afterwards attended Gates Business College in Waterloo where she received a Stenographic degree in August of 1943. For two years Lucille was an office assistant in the Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative in Postville, leaving that post in January of 1946 for Kansas City, MO, to accept a position with the Trans-World Airlines as a stewardess.
In 1948 she became a Flight instructor in the Hostess Training Department. In 1953 becoming a Supervisor of the Department. In 1954 she became the Superintendent of Hostess training for Domestic and International travel. After 7 years in that capacity, she went back to the line to serve again as an air Hostess on domestic flights. Lucille flew on every class of aircraft from the DC3 to the Martins and Connies. On September 23, 1963, Lucy was injured in an airplane accident, which kept her in and out of hospitals for her injuries for 3 years. She resigned from TWA in 1966 and went back to school to brush up on her office skills. In 1967, she became Assistant to the Dean of Students at the business college. In 1968 she became Office Manager for a group of Doctors & Surgeons until retirement from full-time employment in 1981, continuing to work part-time for Union Pacific Railroad.
Lucille married Dr. Joseph James Cochrane in 1983. They retired to Blue Springs, MO, where they lived until her husband’s death in 1986. After Jim’s death, Lucille moved to Iowa to be near her family, living in Ames, Huxley and Ankeny. In June 2008, Lucille moved into Traditions, Assisted Living & Memory Care, in West Union, IA, where she resided until her death.
Lucy created special relationships with co-workers, friends, and family. She was especially kind and thoughtful of her many nieces, nephews, cousins, their children and grandchildren; taking time from her busy life to answer their letters and requests and remembering their birthdays with a card (and often a gift), throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by all who have known and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Wayne McNally (1950) and Robert McNally (1998), three sisters, Virginia Rude (2006) of Onalaska, WI, Shirley Nylund (2006) of Saint Cloud, MN, and Mary Blatti (2010) of New Hampton, IA.
