Paul D. Auterman, 63, of 2203 St. John Drive, died at 4:19 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at home, after a courageous battle with lung and brain cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Resurrection Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Farley, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where there will be a rosary service at 3 p.m. and a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Auterman taught Industrial Education for six years at Western Dubuque High School and Waco School District, Wayland, Iowa, before spending 25 years in the petroleum industry. He owned and operated Paul’s Pump Service for the past 17 years.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1939, in rural St. Olaf, Iowa, son of George and Leona (McGill) Auterman.

He married Janet Stoughton on June 3, 1972, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Farley, Iowa. They lived in Farley and Wayland, Iowa, before moving to Dubuque in 1976. Janet died on Aug. 4, 2000.

He graduated from Luana (Iowa) High School in 1957. He farmed with his father for several years before attending college. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1970 and received a Master’s of Arts degree from Northeast Missouri State University in 1975.

He was a member of Resurrection Parish, where he served as a lector. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Farley Council and the Petroleum Equipment Institute.

Surviving are his mother, Leona Auterman, of Monona, Iowa; two brothers, Thomas (Joan) Auterman, of Fairfax, Iowa, and Philip (Brenda) Auterman, of Iowa City; two sisters, Mary Auterman, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Sister Cecelia Marie Auterman, PBVM, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his father, George Auterman.

Memorials may be given to Albrecht Acres; the American Cancer Society, Dubuque Chapter; and Hospice of Dubuque.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque; Dr. Kukla; the Rev. Robert Davies and Deacon Carl Adams from Resurrection Parish; and the many friends who helped care for Paul during his illness. A special thanks to Tim Loeffelholz, Kathy Reuter and Pat Nordhues.
