Another pioneer passed away. Mrs. Bergit Lien, born in Norway, Nov. 2, 1842, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Kittleson, Sunday, November 16, at the age of eighty-eight years and two weeks.

Mrs. Lien came with her parents from Norway to Iowa in 1856. In 1860 she was united in marriage to Ole Lien, and they settled on a farm in Clayton county, known as the Kirkeberg farm, living there for a number of years, then moved to the farm now owned by Olaf Berg, where they resided at the time of the death of Mr. Lien in 1892.

In 1900 Mrs. Lien moved to Clermont, living there until four years ago, when due to ill health, she and her aged sister moved to the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Sophie Kittleson, where she lived up to the time of her death. Mrs. Lien had been poorly for a number of years, and since her quite serious illness in May of 1927, she had gradually become weaker, until quietly as one going to sleep, she passed away.

Mrs. Lien was a very lovable character, always pleasant and considerate unto others, always contented with her lot, and had for all who came to see her a message of good cheer. She was a very devout christian who in word and deed revealed those traits that bear witness of a life in which the spirit of God dwells.

To Mr. and Mrs. Lien were born thirteen children, of whom eight have preceeded their mother in death, six dying in their infancy, and Mrs. Knut Groth in 1913, and Mrs. Halsten Groth in 1922. There live to mourn her death, the five children, Mrs. Oscar Gunderson of Fargo, N.D., E.O. Lien of Clermont, Thos. Lien of LeRoy, Minnn., Mrs. Julius Olson of Decorah, and Mrs. Henry Kittleson of Clermont, also twenty-five grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren, besides a large number of other relatives and friends, for all who knew Mrs. Lien loved her.

The funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 20, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Kittleson, and the West Clermont Lutheran church, of which the deceased was a charter member. Interment was made in the family lot in the Houg cemetery, five miles east of Elgin. The pastor, Rev. G. Gunsten, officiated. The pall bearers were four grandsons, Henry Groth, Oscar Lien, Bernard Lien, Orlando Kittleson and the two nephews, Henry and Adolph Thompson of Eagle Grove.

Blessed be the memory of this worthy pioneer.

~Elgin Echo, November 27, 1930
