Halsten S. Halstenson

Halstein S. Halstenson, son of Groth and Sever Halstenson, was born in Marion township, Clayton county on December 16, 1854, and died in his home in Clermont, Saturday, Feb. 12, 1938, at the age of eighty-three years, one month and twenty-four days.

He was one of a family of nine children. Five brothers and sisters having preceded him in death. These being Albert Halstenson of Elkader, Mrs. Celia Groth and Mrs. Rachael Gunderson of St. Ansgar, a brother Nels, who died in early youth and one infant sister. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his sister Nellie, who shared his home with him, also Julia Peterson of Battle Lake, Minn., and Carl Sever Halstenson of Elgin, and thirteen nieces and nephews besides numerous cousins.

His early life was spent on the farm. After the death of his parents he and his brother Albert, purchased the old homestead and for a number of years farmed together. Then he sold his interest in the place to his brother and went to St. Ansgar where for a short period of years he was engaged in the grocery business. Again he returned to Marion township and purchased a small acreage at Gunder and there lived for a few years. However, he tired of living alone and sold the place. In 1925 he purchased the home at Clermont and with his sister Nellie, spent the remaining thirteen years of his life.

He was a man with a deep sense of religion, a great reader principally of religious writings. He was fond of church music and enjoyed singing the hymns he loved best. He was a member of the Marion church at Gunder. He was baptized by Rev. Nels Brandt and confirmed by H.C. Rornas before there was a church at Gunder. When the Marion church was built he became a member and has retained that membership all through the years. The loss of his hearing was a great regret to him since he was unable to hear a ssmon.

His neigbors will miss his kindly figure as he toiled his hillside garden. But his labors had grown too heavy for him and the Lord who knows all things best, has taken him to that heavenly abode where the trials of this earth are no more.

Funeral services were held from the funeral home of F.C. Muehlethaler, from where the procession went to the Marion Lutheran church. The Rev. S.J. Strandjord conducted the services there and burial was made in the Houg cemetery.
