Abraham Habeger, one of the oldest men in this locality, died at his home three miles south-east of Elgin, Friday, May 28, after an illness of just a few days. He had always enjoyed good health until the very last and was remarkably active for a man over eighty-four years of age.

Abraham Habeger was born at Akron, Ohio September 14, 1841, and died May 28, 1926, at the advanced age of eighty-four years, eight months and fourteen days. At a young age he came to Iowa with his parents and settled around Elgin, enduring at that time all the hardships of pioneer life. In June, 1866, he was married to Babetha Pfister and they settled on what was known as the Ben Baumgartner farm west of Elgin. After a period of twenty years they moved to Sabetha, Kansas, where they farmed for twenty-two years until the death of the faithful wife and companion of torty-two years. On January [illegible day, possibly 1910] he was married to Elisa [Ny----ger] to which union three children were born, two boys and a girl. For a short time they made their home at West Bend and then settled three miles south-east of Elgin where they lived until the time of his death.

Mr. Habeger was of a very cheerful disposition and was liked by all who knew him. He was not a member of any denomination but was a regular attendant at the Apostolic church, the teachings of which he faithfully followed. It can truthfully be said that he was an "honest Abe."

In his last illness he was tenderly cared for by his wife and friends who did everything possible to make his last hours comfortable and pleasant. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, his daughter Selma, 15; sons Abraham, 14, and Elias, 11; one brother Tofield Habeger of Lemar, Mo., three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Frieden of Kiowa, Kan., Mrs. Emil Bruellman of West Bend, Mrs. Mary Schlupp of Lamar, Mo.

The funeral which was attended by many relatives and friends was held at the Apostolic church Tuesday and burial was made in the cemetery there. Rev. Banwart of West Bend, conducted the services. The relatives and friends from a distance who came to attend the funeral of Mr. Habeger were: Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bruellman, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Habeger, Sarah Imhof, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Banwart and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Freiden all of West Bend; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Streit, Cornelius Gisel, Mrs. John Heiniger, Lydia Habeger, all of Sabetha, Kansas; Dan Habeger of Algona, and Mr. and Mrs. John Ackerman and child of Morton, Illinois.
