Robert Paul Wirkler

Robert Paul Wirkler, son of Eldo and Lena (Soltow) Wirkler, was born May 19, 1919 in Monona, IA. He graduated from Monona High School in 1936. He served in the Army during World War II with the 462 Air Serv. Group.

Robert was united in marriage to Marion G. Snitker on November 23, 1940 at Waukon, IA. He and his brother, Don owned Wirkler's Plumbing and Heating for over 40 years. He served 10 years on the Monona Volunteer Fire Department. Robert enjoyed golfing, nature, his bird sanctuary, traveling, playing 500 with his grandchildren and sons-in-law, fishing and hunting.

Robert died Tuesday, June 23, 1998 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, 1998 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Jim Schultz; two brothers, Woodrow and Donald Wirkler; and one sister, Evelyn Liddle.

Survivors include his wife, Marion; four daughters, Sharyn (Hal) Poppen of Sioux City, Barbara (Tom) Wilson of Davenport, Vicky Schultz of Arcadia, WI and Kim (Ken) Sutherland of Omaha, NE; 10 grandchildren, Mike and Mark Poppen, Nicole and Natalie Wilson, Stacey Klein, Matthew and Jon Schultz, Joel, Alex and Molly Sutherland; two great grandchildren, Morgan Poppen and Alexander Klein; one sister, Betty Gehring of Monona; and a host of other relatives and friends.
