Former Luana Resident Passes On in Oregon
Mrs. Jane Warner Oathout, 87 year old resident of the Elliott Prairie district, passed away at her home on Friday of last week, June 17, and funeral services were held at the Hall chapel Monday afternoon, followed by interment in Belle Passi cemetery.Rev. A.B. Snyder of the Congregational church officiated. Rev. Snyder pointed out that Mrs. Oathout had lived through a most interesting and stirring period of the world's history. She was living when the Mexican war took place, as well as the Civil war and subsequent conflicts. She saw the invention and perfection of the telegraph, telephone, wireless telegraphy and the radio; she saw the use of such inventions as the automobile come into wide use. "She saw a continent subdued and conquered and a great nation developed," said Rev. Snyder. She was 20 years old when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Jane Warner Oathout was born on New Year's Day, 1845, in St. Lawrence county, New York, and lived there until 1852, when she accompanied her parents to Clayton county, Iowa. In 1872 she was married to Henry C. Oathout, and was left a widow ten years later. She became a member of the Congregational church when a very young woman.
She had been a resident of Oregon since 1910.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Oathout-Emery of Barlow and a son, Chester A. oathout of Elliott Prairie. -Woodbury (Oregon) Independent
