Henry N. Albeck, retired businessman and former town official, died Wednesday, November 21, following a long illness. He was 80 years old. Funeral services were held Friday in the Pilkington funeral home with the Rev. Leon Wallace, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating, followed by the ceremony of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Monona of which he was a member. Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetery.
Henry Nelson Albeck was born October 18, 1876, at Copenhagen, Denmark. He came to the United States at the age of 17 and, after spending a year in Chicago, he went to Clear Lake, where his cousins lived. He was employed there as a blacksmith and continued in that trade in McGregor, coming back here in 1910. In 1920 he bought a grocery store located where the present Corner Market is and after a few years moved to the present location of the Davies Locker and Grocery. He operated the grocery store along and later, when the locker was added in partnership with Earl Davies, who purchased the business when Mr. Albeck retired about eight years ago.
Mr. Albeck was a member of the McGregor Fire Department for a number of years and served many terms as justice of peace. He was also a member of the town council. His membership in the Odd Fellows lodge extended over a 54 year period during which time he served as secretary for about 30 years.
He was married to Alice Allard on September 18, 1901. They were the parents of two children, Fern and Eldon. Mrs. Albeck died April 18, 1935.
On June 14, 1939, he was married to Alice M. Goddard, who survives him. Other survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Yale Watson, of Minneapolis; a son, C. Eldon Albeck, of Davenport, one granddaughter, Mrs. John Wright, and a great granddaughter, Janet Wright, both of Minneapolis; a brother, Jens Albeck in Denmark; a nephew and a niece in Denmark, and a nephew, George Albeck, of Davenport, and two nieces, Lillian Augustine of Kansas City and Claire Ring of Chicago.
Mr. Albeck made a return visit to Denmark before World War II and, after his retirement, he and Mrs. Albeck spent the winters in the south until he was unable to travel, following a broken leg he suffered a few years ago.
