HENKES, Vernis Louis --- 1920-1995

Vernis Louis Henkes, son of Monroe and Louise (Wagner) Henkes, was born April 12, 1920 in Wagner Township, Clayton County. He died Saturday, February 25, 1995 at the family farm in rural Luana. He was 74 years old.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, by Reverend H. M. Adix. He received his education at the Gooding School in Wagner Township.

On January 16, 1946, Vernis Henkes and Glenda Schievelbein were married at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg by Rev. R. H. Steege. The couple farmed in Wagner Township, rural Luana. In the fall of 1988 they moved to their present home in Monona. Vernis' greatest love was his grandchildren, registered Holsteins and all sports. His grandchildren, Leah and Matt, are the 6th generation to live on the century farm.

Vernis started Henkeseen Holstein herd and was especially excited that their first A. I. bull from the herd came through with an excellent proof in January. He enjoyed hosting local, out of state, and international tour groups who came to view the herd and facilities.

Vernis received the Clayton County Dairy Producer Award in 1988. Vernis was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Iowa Holstein Association.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a sister, Marietta Scheffert; a niece, Connie Jurging, and two brothers-in-law, Arno Krambeer and Virgil Scheffert.

Surviving is his wife, Glenda; a son, Trent and his wife, Leslie of Luana; two grandchildren, Leah Ann and Matthew Lewis Henkes; two sisters, Mrs. Alberta Rolland of Monona, and Mrs. Helen Krambeer of Luana; two brothers, Alton Henkes of Elkader, and Calvin Henkes and his wife, Shirley, of Farmersburg; a brother-in-law and his wife, Lendall and Fern Schievelbein of Farmersburg; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 28, 1995, at 1 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Pastor Bruce Hanson officiated. Pallbearers were Harlan White, Junior Lenth, Robert Sass, Richard Sass, Gene Walter, Wilfred Wille, David Kurth, and Dan Moon. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of services.
