Obituary Mrs. Fred Smith, Sr.
In the family home in Boardman Township at 4am Wednesday morning, August 22, 1900, Mrs. Fred Smith passed away to the other shore. Harriet Eliza Torrey was born June 25, 1839 in Monroe County, New York, and came to Clayton County, Iowa with her parents at the age of eleven years. On March 9, 1859, she was united in marriage to Mr. Fred Smith. They have lived together peacefully and quietly since that time on the farm about two miles south of Elkader. Eight children were born to them and her husband, five children, two brothers and one sister survive her.
