Norman Orlando Peterson
Norman Orlando Peterson, 83, Postville, Iowa, formerly of St. Olaf, Iowa, died Saturday, January 15, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center, West Union, Iowa. He was born on September 17, 1927, to Anton and Alma (Johnson) Peterson in rural Gunder, Iowa, on the family farm. He attended country school through the 8th grade, 9th and 10th grade at Elkader High School, and graduated from Postville High School.
Norman was united in marriage to Vivian Hesse on February 14, 1952, at the Norway Lutheran Church Parsonage in St. Olaf. Seven children were born to this union. He started farming and doing custom hay chopping. He then worked for uncles on the farm, assessing farms and at the creamery in Gunder. He also worked for Lowell's Electric doing insulating, wiring, electric, hogs and field work. He started working at the Turkey Plant in 1989 and in 1990 moved to Postville and retired from the Turkey Plant in 1996. He then went to Wapsi in Decorah and retired from there in 1998.
Norman enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, snowmobiling, wood working, dancing, playing cards, working in the garden and going to walks. He enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Peterson, Postville; six children, Norma Peterson, Postville, Vincent (Jackie) Peterson, Byron, IL, Russell (Betty) Peterson, St. Olaf, Susan Kuhse, Postville, Betty (Randy) Eberling, Marshall, MN, Peter (Deanna) Peterson, Leaf River, IL; thirteen grandchildren, Serena (Eric) Whalen, Cory (Stacey) Peterson, Krista Peterson, Michelle (Chris) Gregerson, Shelby (Robert) Roe, Jacob (Jessica) Hauk, Nicholas (Kate) Hauk, Mindy (Edwardo) Ixen, Kendra (Leo) Roman, Andrew Eberling, Miranda Eberling, Stacey Peterson, Tyler Peterson and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Toney Lynn Peterson and one sister, Arlene Leeman.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, Iowa. The Rev. Marshall Hahn will officiate.
Burial will follow in Norway Lutheran Cemetery, St. Olaf, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, from 3-7 p.m. at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
