Duane E. Dietrich, 67, of Waukon, died Sat., Nov. 17, 2001 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held Weds., Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with the Reverends Lynn G. Groe and David E. Schafer officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Duane Edward Arthur Dietrich was born Sept 21, 1934 in Luana. His parents were Erwin and Gladys (Bruns) Dietrich. He lived with his family a very short time in Luana and Cresco before they moved to Garnavillo. He was baptized in Luana, confirmed at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1953. Duane served in the National Guard from 1954-1956, the U.S. Army from 1957-1959, and the Army Reserves until 1962. He was a heavy equipment operator and served some duty in Guam.
On Aug. 26, 1972, he married Jane Copp at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Duane spent his working life operating heavy construction equipment. He started with Les Smorstad in Waukon, then worked for 30 years with Holland Bros. Construction Co. in Decorah. He also worked a short time for Patterson Bros. in Clayton, and finished working with Reilly Construction of Ossian in 1998.
Duane enjoyed hunting and fishing and taking trips to lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He also liked to bowl and formerly played on town ball teams. He was an avid fan of many sports on T.V., enjoyed woodworking and building bird houses, and liked to work jigsaw puzzles.
Duane was preceded in death by his father, Erwin.
Survivors include his wife Jane of Waukon; one daughter, Darcy Dietrich of Bloomington, MN; one son Daren Dietrich of Decorah; his mother, Gladys Dietrich of Elkader; and sister, Delores and her husband Duane Klink of Elkader, a brother, Al Dean Dietrich of Frankville; and his mother-in-law, Alice Copp, and sister-in-law, Mary and her husband Don Treloar, both of Hawkeye.
Honorary casketbearers are Hilmen and Lillian Christianson, Ordell and Virginia Bjerke, Gerald and Verda Palas, and Deb and Fred Oelberg.
