Dies in California

Relatives here have received word of the death of Rev. Philip J. Dornseif, who died recently at his home, 535 S. Orange St., Orange, Cal. He was a former resident of this vicinity. His father was a former teacher at the Gehlenbeck Lutheran school near Hamel. Rev. Dornseif's death was due to a prolonged illness of complications. He had attained the age of 78 years and 9 months. He was a minister of Lutheran churches for over 50 years.

He was born March 21, 1856 at Centerville, Ill. At the age of 12 he entered a six-year course at Concordia College, Ft. Wayne, Ind., following which he completed his preparation for the ministry at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He was married to Miss Marie Gunther on May 31, 1880, at Fort Dodge, Ia. To this union was born eight children. Mrs. Dornseif preceded him in death April 30, 1895 at Wilton Junction, Ia.

He is survived by six daughters, Miss Lydia Dornseif, Mrs. L.H. Intorf, Orange, Cal., Mrs. Paul Brammer, St. Ansgar, Ia., Mrs. Karl Rudolph of Watertown, Minn., Mrs. Arthur Adrian, Escalon, Cal., Mrs. George Werning, Newhall, Ia., two sons, Philip L. Dornseif, Los Angeles, and Lorenz A. Dornseif, Tujunga, Cal.; one brother, Rev. Louis W. Dornseif, Decatur, Ind., one sister, Mrs. Emma Von Strohe, Columbia, Ind., 29 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran church, Orange, Cal. Rev. C.E. Guenther, former classmate of Rev. Dornseif at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, officiated. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Orange, Cal.

~Note: Rev. Dornseif served as pastor of the Lutheran church in Elkport when his biography was published in the 1882 History of Clayton County. He subsequently served congregations in several Iowa towns. (his bio can be found in the 1882 biographies on the Clayton co. IAGenWeb site - link below)
