Saturday, July 24, 2010, Dubuque Telegraph HeraldGUTTENBERG, Iowa -- August Charles Thein, 87, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Guttenberg, with the Rev. Richard Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Guttenberg City Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at the funeral home.
He was born on Jan. 13, 1923, in Garber, son of Fred and Emma (Barton) Thein. Augie was baptized on May 27, 1936, and confirmed on May 31, 1936, at St. John's Congregational Church in Garber, by Pastor Harold W. Hohman. He later graduated from Elkport High School in 1940.
Augie served in the Army during World War II from Oct. 26, 1944, until his honorable discharge on Nov. 22, 1946, and he earned several medals, including two Bronze Stars.
He married Donna Winch on March 12, 1955, at St. John's Church in Garber.
For several years, Augie worked for the city of Guttenberg. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed using his metal detector, collecting coins and tokens, being part of treasure hunts, antiquing, and going to live auctions and garage sales.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Donna Thein, of Guttenberg; a daughter, Sherri Furstenburg, of Guttenberg; two sons, the Rev. Richard Meyer, of Williamsburg, and Bruce Thein, of Guttenberg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Berniece (Don) Wold, of Saint Olaf, and Bernita (James) Brady, of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Frederick Thein, of Guttenberg; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Louanne; a sister, Nelda Willie; and two brothers, Melvin and Lester Thein.
