Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. May 5, 2010 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa for Myron William Fred Ihde, 87, of Monona, IA , who died Friday April 30, 2010 at Elkader Hospital.

Myron was born at the home farm outside Farmersburg to Elmer and Viola (Suckow) Ihde on December 23, 1922. Interment was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona, with military honors. Leonard Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

After helping on the family farm, Myron worked in Kansas and California manufacturing airplanes, including the B-25. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943, serving in the 388th Bomb Group where he flew 31 bombing missions over Europe as tail gunner in a B-17. He was injured in battle, and returned to Monona after a long convalescence.

Myron was united in marriage to Mary Louise Wagner on October 28, 1947. Three children, Dennis, Wayne and Deanna were born to this union. He worked for Drahn Implement and Luana Co-Op before becoming Postmaster in Monona from which he retired after more than twenty years of service. Myron was a long time member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the American Legion, and St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Myron designed and built his home in Monona, doing almost all of the work himself. He was always eager to learn new things and loved solving problems. He enjoyed helping to build airplanes and wood working. Myron was such an avid photographer; he even built some of his own cameras and for a while photographed weddings for Carroll Studios.

Mary Lou and Myron loved to be on the go, often driving out of the way to look up old friends. Highlights of his life included a trip to Germany to visit relatives, trips to visit his children, and reunions with his crew members. Myron was also a pilot, and loved flying.

He is survived by son Dennis (Jeanne) Ihde of Bailey, CO, son Wayne (Barbara) Ihde of Boulder, CO, and daughter Deanna Ihde of Newton, IA; grandchildren Joanna Ihde and James Allen (Bianka) Ihde; and great grandchildren Hope, Brandon, Stryder, Zoe and Olivia; mother-in-law Lucille Wagner; sisters-in-law Dolores Klingman and JoAnn (Lloyd) Scherf; brothers-in-law Milton (Evelyn) Ashline, Donald (Shirley) Wagner, Roger (Alice) Wagner, David (Elizabeth) Wagner and Jerome Schultz, plus numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Myron was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his father-in-law Arthur Wagner; sisters Evelyn Ashline and Dorothy Trappe; sisters-in-law Elaine Schultz and Jean Wagner; and brothers-in-law Emmett Trappe, LeRoy Klingman and Karl Wagner.
