Bahls, Helen Margaret (Fascher) 1935-2010

Helen Margaret (Fascher) Bahls died Saturday, February 13, 2010, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. February 18, 2010 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, IA, with visitation being from 4-7 p.m. February 17 at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Inurnment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Center, IA.

Helen was born August 26, 1935, on a farm in Clayton Township, Clayton County Iowa, the youngest child of William and Elsie (Hagen) Fascher.

She was received as a child of God, through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, on December 1, 1935, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, by Rev. M.J. Harder. She renewed her baptismal covenant through the right of Confirmation on June 19, 1949, at Norway Lutheran Church by Rev. S.J. Strandjord.

She attended rural schools near St. Olaf, and graduated from Elkader High School.

Helen worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator, Clayton County Court House, and as a Dental Assistant; however, the job she took most pride in was being a homemaker and raising her family. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, refinishing furniture, dancing, spending time with family and friends and reading to her grandchildren.

On April 27, 1957, Helen was united in marriage to Dwayne Bahls at Norway Lutheran Church by Pastor Bruce Boyce. To this union, four children were born, Dennis Dwayne, Corinne Susan, Gerry Lee and Laura Beth.

Survivors include her husband Dwayne of Elkader, four children, Dennis (Sandra) Bahls of Elkader, Corinne Bahls of Cedar Rapids, Gerry Bahls of Elkader, Laura (Kevin) Krych of Marion; her grandchildren, Melissa Hines, Jordan Bahls (fiancé, Beth), Stephanie Krych, Madeline Krych; one great-grandson, Ethan Hines; two brothers, Harvey (Bonnie) Fascher of Coggon, Valmah (Gene) Fascher of Naples, FL and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, William C. Fascher on June 28, 1972, and her mother, Elsie Fascher on November 28, 1979.
