A Memorial Service was held at 10:30 a.m. January 30, 2010 at United Methodist Church in Colesburg, Iowa with interment in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Colesburg, for Jean Prentice, who died Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. She was eighty-six years of age. Leonard Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Jean was born on January 25, 1924, to Earl and Elsie (Barton) Brown on the home farm north of Colesburg. She was raised and educated in the area, graduating from the Elkport High School in 1941. Jean continued her education at Elkader Junior College and the University of Upper Iowa in Fayette. She obtained a BS degree and pursued a teaching career that lasted thirty years. In 1988 she retired with a wonderful party which included family, friends, and many former students.

Jean was united in marriage to Alan Moritz on March 12, 1943, in Des Moines. Three children were born to this union. Alan died in 1953. She then was united in marriage to Neil Prentice on April 5, 1956, in Waterloo, and they resided in Colesburg. Neil died in 2000.

Jean enjoyed life through countless activities that included her family and many friends. She loved to bowl, play golf, spend time at the cottage in Guttenberg, and travel with Neil during their retirement. Jean’s quick and direct approach to life will be missed by those who loved her most.

Survivors include her children, Neil (Mary) Moritz of Humboldt, Steve (Linda) Moritz of Edgewood, and Linda (Ted) Bush of Manchester; eleven grandchildren, Michael (Lori) Moritz, Mark (Amy) Moritz, Matt (Alecia) Moritz, Isaiah (Tasha) Schott, Manda Schott, Joseph Schott, Stacie (Darren) Besick, Alan (Aley) Moritz, Kris (Burke) Bockenstedt, Craig Salow, and Andy (Crystal) Salow; seventeen great-grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law, Howard Rentschler of Edgewood and Malin Schultz of Monona.

In addition to her two husbands, Jean was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marie Rentschler; and one great-granddaughter, Lydia Rose Moritz.

Memorials may be directed to Oak Hill Cemetery.
