Funeral services for Lyle Looby were held Monday, September 17, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville. Reverend Bruce Hanson of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, Iowa officiated. Honorary casket bearers were the grandchildren. Inurnment will take place in the Gooding Cemetery, rural Farmersburg.
Lyle V. Looby, the son of Charles and Althea (Lemke) Looby, was born March 21, 1923 at Farmersburg, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 while visiting his sons in Amarillo, Texas. He had reached the age of 78 years, five months and 22 days.
He received his education in the rural Looby School near his home and also attended the Elgin High School.
On October 8, 1952 he was married to El Donna Lee Kurth in St. John Lutheran Church at Farmersburg by the Reverend Steege. To this union six children were born. They farmed in Wagner Township near Luana for 24 years. In 1976 they moved to a farm near Farmersburg where Lyle also owned and operated Looby Sand and Gravel until his retirement in 1985. For 26 years he delivered the Des Moines Register in Clayton County.Lyle was a collector of John Deere memorabilia, including both life-size and model tractors, and he liked to work on old cars. He enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great granddaughter.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charlton Looby, and his father-and- mother-in-law, Eldon and Ella Kurth.
Surviving is his wife, El Donna, four sons, Randy (Nancy) Looby of Dalhart, TX, Terry (Barb) Looby of Calmar, Iowa, Rick Looby and Lanny Looby of Amarillo, TX, two daughters, Sherry (Arnold) King, Jr. of West Union, IA and Tammy (Willie) Jones of Waterloo, IA; 15 grandchildren, Jason and Cody King, Justin, Lucas, and Jessica Looby, and Miranda Looby, Krystal and Collin Looby, Chasity Looby, Bobby King, Brandon and Ashley Looby, Anissa and Anthony Schroeder, and Erica Looby; and 1 great granddaughter, Emily Hammond; 3 sisters, Idella (Helmuth) Landt, of Luana, IA, Dorothy (Frank) Troester of Waukon, IA and Patricia Looby of Marion, IA.
