John Ellsworth Baird, for over sixty years a prominent citizen of Strawberry Point, Iowa, died at his home in that city, August 25th.
Brother Baird had been a Mason for more than 53 years, and was nearly 90 years of age at the time of his death. The funeral services were in charge of Strawberry Point Lodge No. 130, Brother Nathan Scofield acting as Master.
Brother Scofield is over 90 years of age and has been a Mason over 62 years. Brothers Baird and
Scofield had been friends and neighbors as well as brother Masons in the same lodge for more than 50 years. Several years ago they agreed that the survivor should conduct the Masonic funeral service over the remains of the one who was first to go. Brother Scofield, now living at Pocahontas, went to Strawberry Point to keep his part of the agreement.~Freemasons, Grand Lodge Bulletin, October, 1918; pg 105
