Tom Looney, 56, Passes On Tuesday

Thomas Patrick Looney, aged 56, passed away Tuesday morning, August 21, 1947, at 6:10 o'clock in Postville hospital, where he had been taken the day before. Mr. Looney, a lifelong resident of this community, had been ailing for about 10 years, being bedridden since June 10.

Funeral services will be conducted in St. Bridget's Catholic church in this city Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock, with the Rev. Francis Vallaster officiating, and interment will be in the Catholic cemetery at Monona. Six nephews will act as pallbearers.

Mr. Looney was born in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, June 23, 1891, as the son of Thomas and Julia Colliton Looney. He received his early education in the schools of that township and later attended the business college in Oelwein.

He was united in marriage with Miss Helen McKernan on March 4, 1924, in St. Bridget's church, their marriage being the first official act here of the late Rev. P. Hogan.

Six children were born to this union, all of whom, together with their mother, survive. They are Kathleen, a registered nurse at Peoria, Ill., Dorothy of Minneapolis, Minn., Jack, Donna, Julie and Carol at home. Also surviving are five sisters and one brother, Hannah, Mrs. Matt Reiter; Mayme, Mrs. Christ Cavanaugh; Grace, Mrs. Clem Dunn; Rose, Mrs. Walter Delaney, and Miss Estelle Looney, all of Waterloo; and Ed Looney, who lives on the home farm in Grand Meadow township. His parents and one brother, John, passed away a number of years ago.

Mr. Looney, who was a pioneer hybrid seed corn dealer in this community for the DeKalb company, followed farming all of his lifetime. He and Mrs. Looney first lived on a farm near Farmersburg for a year; then for 14 years they lived near Elkader, and about 12 years ago moved to the Herman Webb farm east of town where they have been living since.
