Michael Johnson, Sr.

Michael John Johnson, Sr., age 46, of Monona died Thursday, October 30, 2008 on Golden Avenue, rural Farmersburg, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, November 4 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, with the Rev. Christopher Staley officiating. Burial followed in the Monona City Cemetery, Monona.

Mike was born May 18, 1962 in Prairie du Chien, WI to John and Maxine (Tayek) Johnson. He graduated from Mar Mac High School, McGregor, in 1980, and attended two years of college in Calmar for Auto Mechanics.

Mike was united in marriage to Grace Sunnes July 23, 1983 at the Waukon Lutheran Church, Waukon. Two sons were born to this union. Mike worked as a welder for most of his life. He also worked as a mechanic with Pladsen Motors in Waukon, a fabricator with Bituma in Marquette, Riley Construction in Ossian and most recently Caterpillar in Elkader. During his years in high school, Mike worked as a tour guide for Spook Cave. He enjoyed NASCAR, Bald Eagles, working on cars, darts, boating on the Mississippi River, hunting and spending time with his family, friends and his dog, Jesebel. Mike was a volunteer fire fighter for Marquette for several years. Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his father, John (Burnita) Johnson of Wauzeka, WI; his mother, Maxine Johnson of Alta Vista; two sons, Michael J. (Barb) Johnson, Jr. of Decorah and Craig (Jennifer Imbus) Johnson of Monona; his girlfriend, Angie Ogden of Prairie du Chien, WI; his grandmother, Marcella Tayek of McGregor; two grandchildren, James and Jenna Johnson; two sisters, Sheila (Dean) Lipa of Elma and Jennifer (Paul Budde) Johnson of Dyersville; two brothers, Neal (Nereyda) Johnson of Dade City, FL and Ryan (Becky) Johnson of McGregor; one step-sister, Kellie Ronnfeldt of Boscobel, WI; two step-brothers, Charles (Nicole) Gokey of Bagley, WI and Cory Gokey of Wauzeka, WI; four nieces; one nephew; one great-nephew; and numerous other family members and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Earl and Henrietta Johnson; maternal grandfather, Donald Tayek; one step-brother, Jay Gokey; and one cousin, Jake Tayek.

Leonard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
