James John Mathews

James John Mathews, 89, Farmersburg, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Postville Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa, following an extended illness. Interment was June 19, 2004 at the Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery in Farmersburg. Leonard Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of the arrangements.

He was born in Farmersburg, Iowa, on January 22, 1915, to James and Ella Marie (Schrader) Mathews. He graduated from Farmersburg High School and the University of Northern Iowa.

James was united in marriage to Dolores M. Klasen on July 18, 1942, in San Luis Obispo, California. Four children were born to this union: James, Marilee Jane, Frederick and Marilou.

He served as an Airplane Inspector in the Army of the United States during W.W.II from July 12, 1943, until April 7, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. James was a teacher for a few years, then became self employed as owner of the Farmersburg Implement. He served on the board of People's State Bank for forty years, Farmersburg City Council, Farmersburg School Board member, MFL School Board member, Farmersburg Wagner Cemetery Director, American Legion member and was active many years in the Clayton County Democratic Party. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards with family and friends, fishing and especially reading. James enjoyed going to auctions and having a collection of Roseville pottery.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores, Farmersburg; children, Dr. James John (Deborah) Mathews, Chicago, IL, Marilee Jane (Harlan) Wright, Indian Head, MD, Frederick Jay (Lisa) Mathews, Lansing; grandchildren, James John (Nili) Mathews, Jamie Leigh Mathews, Matthew Burton (Laura) Wright, Carrie Leigh Wright, Samantha (Paul) Pyszniak, Cody Mathews and one great-grandson, Zachary Ariel.

James was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marilou Mathews and his mother and father-in-law, Harvey and Linda Klasen.
