Friday, 20 September 1895, Elkader Register, Our Local Scrap-Bag, p5, c3:

Died at her home in Garnavillo, on Wednesday evening Sept. 4th, Mrs. Joseph Schlake, at the advanced age of 81 years[,] 6 mo. Deceased was born in Hanover,[Lockhausen] Germany, in 1814.[Aug. 24] With her first husband and children she emigrated to this country in 1853. Her husband and children died enroute. She lived with her sister, Mrs. Tuecke, of Guttenberg, until in July, 1854, she married her surviving husband, with whom for 41 years, she lived a happy and contented life. Of the four children born to them two have preceded their mother in death, while the surviving children, viz: Henry and Mrs. Chas. F. Schmidt live on large farms near this place. Mrs. Schlake enjoyed unusually good health, until of late years the feebleness began on her vitality, still she would not succumb, and continued to attend to her household duties, until two weeks ago, when she was so enfeebled that she took to her bed. Her remaining strength ebbed away, and death finally ended her earthly career. Her remains were buried at the cemetery in Ceres on Saturday. Rev. Sommerlad pronounced the eulogy.—Sentinel.
