She was born May 5, 1924, to Emil and Elsie (Gilster) Zurcher in their family home on the farm north of Farmersburg, IA. Her mother passed away when Marjorie was eighteen days old. Marjorie was baptized at the family home, held in the arms of her aunt, Emma Biel, beside her mother’s coffin. She lived and was raised by her grandparents, Henry and Anna Reinke Gilster. She was educated at the Cresco Public School graduating with the class of 1942.
On Friday, January 1, 1943, Reverend Amos L. Walker and the Monona pastor at the time united Marjorie Mae Zurcher in marriage to Lyman Robert Ferguson at the Cresco Evangelical Church in Howard County. Four children were born to this union.
Lyman and Marjorie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 1, 2003. The couple farmed with Lyman’s father until they purchased their own farm where they resided and raised their family. They sold the family farm in 1976 and moved to Monticello in 1978. Marjorie worked on the family farm with Lyman, and together they raised their family instilling a set of values in their children. They set the example of work ethic for their children. The value of hard work, sticking it out through good times and bad, and the benefit of these ethics. Through example Marjorie showed love, kindness, willingness to help others, unconditional love and forgiveness for each other. She was a great cook, often cooking more than enough to feed everyone at the table. She enjoyed making craft projects, ceramics, writing letters to people and worked hard on family history information. She was active in church circles when younger and living in Monona.
