James E. Cook

MARQUETTE, Iowa -- James E. Cook, 81, of Marquette, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis., following a long illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, McGregor. Burial will be at a later date in San Diego. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, McGregor, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born May 19, 1926, in Joelton, Tenn., son of James and Della (McCarrell) Cook. He attended college for two years.

He married Dorothy Beasley in May, 1949; she preceded him in death in April, 1976. He married Marjorie Loetz in November, 1981.

James served in the Navy for 30 years, working mainly in administration. He served in many areas of the world and the United States. His last duty station was in San Diego, where he retired from.

Surviving are his wife Marjorie, of Marquette; three daughters, Denise (Donald) Hargarden, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Barbara (William) Lawther, of Fountain, Fla., and Margaret Rose, of Mesa, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Kathleen (Phillip) Schubert, of Guttenberg; two stepsons, Gregory Loetz, of La Crosse, and Michael (Colleen) Loetz, of Spencer; two sisters, Virginia Fortier, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Judy Cook, of Menominee, Mich.; two brothers, Marlin (Margaret) Cook, of Tampa, Fla., and Clarence (Betty) Cook, of Florence, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Albert, Floyd, Robert, and William.
