Visitation: 3 to 7 PM March 13, 2005 at Leonard Funeral Home - Elkader, IA and one hour before the service at the church on Monday
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM March 14, 2004 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, IA
Interment: March 14, 2005 at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Center, IA

Ila Mae Best, 75, Garnavillo, formerly of Elkader, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at her son Larry’s home, 24392 Holly Avenue, Garnavillo, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born July 30, 1929, in rural Farmersburg to Edna (Kalke) and Marvin Henning. Ila Mae attended country school, graduated from Farmersburg High School and graduated from Elkader Jr. College. She taught country school full time for three years and was a substitute teacher for thirty years. She was united in marriage to Carlys Best on April 9, 1950, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Two children were born to this union. Ila Mae was a caring and giving person all of her life. She loved spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the Northeast Iowa Antique Tractor Association, Garnavillo TOPS, Allis connection antique tractor club, an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, Sunday school teacher for many years and an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan. Survivors include her children, Larry (Shirley) Best, Garnavillo, Dale (Lori) Best, Zephyr, TX; one grandchild, Mitchell (Nicole) Best; four step-grandchildren, Josh Sullivan, J.P. Sullivan, Staci (Dr. Kevin) Esch, Eric Welter; one great-grandchild, Trenton Best; two step-grandchildren, Gabriella Esch and Bayleigh Sullivan; one brother, Dale (Bonnie) Henning, McGregor; one sister, VaNalle (Don) Miller, Waterloo; one sister-in law, Iva Nell Henning, Decorah.; She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Henning.
