Eugene John August Schutte

Services were held Tuesday, April 8, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville for Eugene "Gene" Schutte, 81, of Postville. Rev. Steve Brackett officiated. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. Gene died Saturday, April 5, at his home from mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

Eugene John August Schutte was born Sept. 10, 1926, to Elmer C. and Marie (Backhaus) Schutte in Bloomfield Township, Castalia, on their farm. He was baptized Oct. 8, 1926, by Rev. E.T. Finck and confirmed March 17, 1940, by Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Gene attended Bloomfield District No. 7 grade school and graduated from Postville High School May 13, 1943. He also attended Iowa Boy's State.

December 30, 1950, he married Lillian Ann Walch. They had four children.

After graduation, Gene worked on the family farm near Castalia. From 1945-1946, he worked at Postville Implement. In 1951 he started farming near Luana in Grand Meadow Township on a farm that had been in the family since 1889, purchasing the farm in 1963. Gene and Lillian moved to Postville in 1991.

In Postville, Gene enjoyed helping neighbors, family and friends with repair jobs, carpentry projects, processing salvage metal and driving trucks for local businesses. Gene also enjoyed overhauling and restoring antique tractors. He enjoyed developing unique projects out of wood or metal.

Gene and Lillian volunteered for community projects like Meals on Wheels, Postville Food Pantry, caring for trees at the cemetery and created a map and records of those who were interred there. They enjoyed attending auction sales.

Gene was a member of the Northeast Iowa Antique Association, Postville Farmers Cooperative Society, serving two terms on the board, Clayton County Farm Bureau, Postville Cemetery Association, serving as vice president, the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club, Pioneer Rock Church Association and the Postville Historical Society. He was a life member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Postville, served as a Sunday School teacher, two terms on the church council and president of the church council and property committee.

Survivors include his wife: Lillian; children: Barbara (Nick) Leuschen, Norfolk, Neb., Bradley (Kathy) Schutte, St. Olaf, Brian (LaRae) Schutte, Luana, and Beth (Daryl) Henkes, Monona; eleven grandchildren: Anne and Sarah Leuschen, Brett (Lanette) Schutte, Craig, Mark, Hanna, Jacqueline and John Schutte, Zachary, Brady and Clayton Henkes; one great-grandchild; one brother: Lloyd Schutte, Castalia; one sister: Eleanor (Ivan) Torkelson, Elgin; sister-in-law: Laura Lenth, Postville; brother: Ewald (Jeanette) Walch, Luana; brother-in-law: Harlan Walch, Luana; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is proceeded in death by his parents and parents-in-law; granddaughter: Faith Ann Henkes; godchild: Lynette Torkelson Wilson; brother-in-law: Alvin Lenth; and sisters-in-law: Clarine Schutte and Marilyn Walch.
