DANIEL EGBERT
Another of our pioneers, one of the early settlers in this section of the county has entered into the sleep that knows no wakening.

DANIEL EGBERT was born in Lebannon, Warn County, [Lebanon, Warren County] Ohio, September 16th, 1822; his age was therefore, at the time of his death, November 5th, 1894, 72 years, 1 month and 24 days. His youth was spent principally upon the farm, receiving the benefits of a common school education. In 1829 the family moved to Terracoupa, [Terre Coupe, St Joseph County] Indiana.

March 25, 1845, Mr. Egbert was joined in marriage to Catherine Barnes, who died February 11th, 1871. To this union nine children were born, six of whom are living; George, Horace, Thad and Mrs. W.H. McGonigle, residing in Monona; Mrs. Samuel Williams, at South Bend, Indiana; Mrs. Rev. H.F. Wyatt at Strawberry Point this county. His only sister, living, is Mrs. Caroline Richardson, of McGregor.

The six children and his sister were present at his bedside the last few hours of his life. His illness was only for a few days, paralysis, stroke after stroke, finally reaching the heart, and in an instant life’s spark went out.

Mr. Egbert and family came to Monona in March, 1864, a citizen among us a few months over 30 years. He engaged in farming, until a few years ago, since which time he has lived in town a retired, quiet life. An honest, upright man, a good citizen, and one highly respected, has given up life’s work and answered the summons, which awaits us all.

In his early days Mr. Egbert was a member of the M.E. Church, and though not an active member during his life in the west, yet his sympathy and support in a pecuniary way, was granted to that denomination.

The funeral ceremony will be held at the M.E. Church this afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. S.S. Smith officiating. Burial in Monona cemetery.
