Bernard Smock dies
Funeral services for Bernard John Smock, 59, of Hazelton, brother of Mrs. Victor (Blanche) Cardin of Marquette, were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Brent’s Funeral Home, Oelwein. Burial was in the Woodland Cemetery, Oelwein.Smock died Friday afternoon, May 21, 1976, from a gunshot wound in the abdomen. His wife discovered him slumped in a chair in the backyard where he had been cleaning his shotgun, when she returned from shopping. He was declared dead on arrival at the Oetwein memorial Hospital. The death was ruled accidental.
Survivors include his wife, Irene of the home in Hazelton; a son, Eldon, of Oelwein; two daughters, Mrs. Ron (Sue) Hyach, Reinbeck, Ia. And Mrs. Gary (Arlese) Shrima, Des Moines; 6 grandchildren; 1 brother, Burnell of Hazelton; 4 sisters, Mrs. Edward (Beulah) McAmis, Omaha, Mrs. Cardin, Mrs. Lloyd (Bernadine) Rentschler, and Mrs. Betty Palmer, Garber.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Burdet and Bentley.
Smock was born in 1917 in Elkport.
