March 15, 1900Reardon, Thomas
With one exception the entire family of the late Thomas Reardon were present at their fathers funeral. The exception was Mrs. Norah Slorah of Spokane who was unable to arrive in time. The other members of the family are: Mrs. Nellie Riley of Spokane, Wash., Mrs Lizzie Keating and Miss Mary Reardon of Great Falls, Mont. Pat Reardon of Chicago, Thomas and John, St. Paul Minn. and Will of Elkader and Miss Katie at home with widowed mother.Reardon died at his home, Giard Ave, McGregor, Iowa Tues. afternoon, March 13, 1900 after a lingering illness. Aged 76 years and 4 months.
Deceased was a native of Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland where his youth and young manhood was spent. 50 years ago he emigrated to America, settling first in vicinity of St. Louis.
Twelve years later he came to McGregor and was employed in building what was then known as the McGregor Western, (now Milwaukee and St. Paul) railway.
About 22 years ago he was in the employ of the city when what older residents of McGregor will remember as the "the B. Street" cut was excavated from Main St. to the river front. While on this he was caught by a cave-in of the embankment where Cox's stable now stands and received injuries from which he never fully recovered. His right hip was fractured and before he was able to be around was taken with lung fever which greatly reduced his remaining vitality.
He bought a small farm on the hill near the cemetary and here with his faithful wife, the family made their home for 15 years.
Mr. Reardon was an accomodating man, a good neighbor, a steadfast friend, indulgent father and a true husband. That he had his faults none will deny these are common to humanity, but his kindly honest ways made friends for him everywhere.
He leaves a wife and 10 children, 4 sons, 6 daughters to mourn his death and to hollow the memory of husband and father, who crippled though he was, strove to make their lives happy.
The funeral occured this forenoon from St. Mary's Catholic Church, the solemn services being conducted by Rev. Father O'Donnell. May he rest in peace. The breaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the community.
