Funeral services for Jeanne Wirkler were held Sunday, July 7, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. The Casket Bearers were: John, Shaun and Patrick Ryan, Robert Schmidt, Rick and Ky Kirkeberg. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Monona Cemetery.

Jeanne Evelyn (Moon) Wirkler, 81, the daughter of Roy W. and Dalia (Heins) Moon, was born March 18, 1921, on a farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. She passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union, Iowa, on Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the age of 81 years, three months, and 14 days.

She was baptized July 3, 1921, by Pastor E. Schmidt in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville and confirmed there on March 25, 1934, by Pastor R. B. Garten.

Jeanne was graduated from the Luana Consolidated Schools in 1937. She pursued a career in elementary education. In 1945 she received a two year degree in elementary education from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, then in 1953 she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State Teachers College (Cedar Falls). Her career extended from the rural one room schoolhouse to Marquette, Iowa to Garfield School in Mason City, Iowa. On March 15, 1958 she was married to Donald E. Wirkler of Monona and continued to teach in the MFL District until her retirement in 1985.

Jeanne's interests included baking and cooking, especially new recipes. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano and organ, and working in her flower and vegetable garden. Jeanne froze and canned the vegetables from her garden. She like to spend time with her husband and friends at their cabin near Marquette, as well as reading and sewing.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald, a sister, Bernice Pearson, two nephews, Boyd Jr. Liddle and Lee Wirkler.

Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, including Janice (Marvin) Grout of Cedar Rapids, and Judy (Lyle) Boebel of Marion, Iowa, Janeen Gehring, Sharyn (Hal) Poppen, Barbara (Tom) Wilson, Vicky Schultz, Kim (Ken) Sutherland, a sister-in-law, Betty (Lowell) Gehring, and a sister-in-law, Marian Wirkler both of Monona.

Jeanne was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, the Retired Teacher's Association in Monona, and an active member of the Library Board. Jeanne was a frequent traveler with the Heritage Club from the Union State Bank in Monona.
