John F. Hoth

John Hoth died at his home in Elkader at 8:20 a.m. July 16, 1948 after an illness of 6 months.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 18, 1948 at 2:00 o'clock at the home, and at 2:30 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre, with the Rev. J. H. Zerhusen officiating. Burial was in the old Clayton Center Cemetery.

He was born in Germany October 22, 1860. At the age of seven years he came to this country with his parents. He settled on a farm in Boardman township in 1867 and lived there 42 years. On July 28, 1924 he moved to Elkader and has lived there 24 years.

On April 14, 1882 he married to Elise Meyer at the Zion Lutheran Church at Clayton Centre.

Survivors include his wife, Elise Hoth, and eight children, namely, Tena Glawe, Ella Breitsprecher, Hilma, Edwin and Elmer, all of Elkader, Willis and Emil, St. Olaf, and Mahala Radloff, Postville. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hoth, and two children, Arthur, who died at the age of 38, and Sophie who died when 7 years of age.

Flower girls were, LuNida, Iva-Nell, Dorothy, Iva-Dean, Marlene and Ila Mae Hoth.

Pallbearers were Arno Funk, Fred Ihlenfeldt, Mike Garaghty, Herman Lenth, William Monlux, George Bente, Harry Bente, and William Freitag.
