Page Wirkler

Page Arthur Wirkler, son of Orville and Anna (Schroeder) Wirkler, was born February 23, 1920 in Franklin Township, Allamakee County, near Monona, Iowa. He died Monday, July 31, 1995 at the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. He was 75 years old.

He graduated from Monona High School. Page served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. He had been stationed in the South Pacific.

On September 2, 1939 (sic), he was married to Helen Miller at Monona, Iowa. To this union four children were born. [Helen died in 1981.]

On October 7, 1938 (sic), he was married to Vera (Williams) Jarms.

Page was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, a lifetime member of the AMVETS and the AMVETS Commander of Iowa from 1979 to 1980 and also a member of the American Legions and the V.F.W.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; a daughter who died in infancy; a son, Allyn, who died April 12, 1995 and a sister, Marian Overbeck.

Surviving is his wife, Vera; two sons, Neil and his wife, Diane Wirkler, of Luana; John and his wife, Cindy Wirkler of Spencer, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Lavon of Arlington, Texas; two grandchildren, Scott Wirkler of Arlington, Texas and Barbara (Wirkler) Yates and her husband, Matthew, of Arlington, Texas; one great grandchild, Tyler Yates; three step-sons, Ron Jarms of Cheney, Wash., Richard Jarms of Yakima, Wash. and Chip Jarms of Mesa, Ariz.; one step-daughter, Sandra and her husband, Robert Deering of Postville; seven step-grandchildren and ten step-great grandchildren; two nieces, Jean Sandry of Davenport, and Kay Pannkuk of New Haven, Ind.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 3, 1995 at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. Rev. Gary Catterson officiated. Special music was provided by Kim Schutte and organist, Beverly Bacon. Casket bearers were Gene Walter, Wilfred Wille, Loren Eberling, Franklin Wacker, Robert Grady and Robert Deering. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. interment was in the Postville Cemetery with military honors by the Monona and Postville AMVETS, American Legion and V.F.W. Posts.

Military Honors Accorded Page Wirkler

Page Wirkler served in the United States marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in the South Pacific theater during and after WW II.

Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Marines, he returned to the Monona-Postville area.

Page was a life member of the Amvets Post # 27 of Monona, and as a charter member served as Iowa State Commander from 1979 to 1980. As Iowa State Commander, Iowa Amvets made its most significant gains with new Amvets posts and increased membership under his instrumental influence and leadership. Page was known to be dedicated and devoted to his duties without fail.

Full military honors were rendered for Page, upon leaving the church for burial in the Postville Cemetery. As the flag draped casket arrived at the burial site, honor Guard rended honors. The United States American flag was folded by State Commander Raymond Davis and Charles J. Vondracek of Evansdale, Iowa. Charles presented next of kin, Page's wife Vera, with the American flag. State Commander Raymond Davis presented Amvets death certificate and Amvets grave marker.

A volley of three shots was fired by Amvets firing squad. Taps were played by recording by Schutte Funeral Service of Postville.
