Monona, IA

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. November 13, 2006 at Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, IA, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.

Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. November 14, 2006 at Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Giard, IA.
Interment: November 14, 2006 at Giard Cemetery, rural Giard, IA.

Darrell Eugene Hedemann, 80, of Monona, passed away peacefully with his family beside him at Central Community Hospital in Elkader on Friday, November 10, 2006.

He was born October 29, 1926, to Marvin and Alice (Baker) Hedemann on the family farm near Garnavillo. He attended rural school and the Garnavillo Public School. Following graduation in 1944, and working on neighboring farms, he served in the US Army Signal Corps.

He was united in marriage to Joyce Bernhard on June 28, 1947, at the Giard Methodist Church, where he became an active member. They were blessed with four children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

They farmed near Giard until 1988, when they moved to Monona. Darrell was treasurer of the Giard Cemetery Association for many years. Some of the things he enjoyed include camping, fishing, gardening, baking and woodworking. His family was very special to him, and always helped them by putting them first in his life.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joyce Hedemann; his children, Hugh (Joanne) Hedemann, Janice Hedemann and Stephen Mangano and Susan (Michael) McGee; grandchildren, Cheryl (Doug) Tesar, Andrea Hedemann, Erin (Michael) Schmelzer, Charles (Jen) Hedemann and Anna and Claire McGee and great-grandchildren, Dyllan Bascom and Vincent and Joseph Schmelzer.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark on December 31, 1969; a brother, Grover Hedemann and a sister, Mardelle Godfrey.
