Arlene Heck was born the daughter of Otto and Nellie (Anderson) Hanson on February 20, 1922 on the family farm south of Gunder. She died Tuesday, August 15, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Arlene attended Vellerson Country School and graduated from Elkader High School. She attended Junior College in Elkader before teaching at the Vellerson School, where her younger brother and sister were among her students.

On August 9, 1947 she was united in marriage with Loras J. “Doc” Heck in St. Louis, Missouri. After their marriage they moved to Chicago.

Arlene served as a Personal Sales Supervisor for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for 27 years. After her retirement in 1984, the Hecks returned to Garnavillo. Arlene was an active member of Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. She enjoyed quilting with the church women, playing cards with her friends, and was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Arlene recorded the history of the Marion Township # 6 Vellerson School and the Anderson Family History. She served on the committee to record the Gunder History. Arlene and Doc were avid travelers. They enjoyed many cruises and trips through the years, visiting Scandinavia, Holland, Germany, and the Caribbean. The Heck home was always open to family and friends. Arlene especially enjoyed preparing Norwegian foods. She taught many of her nieces and nephews to make lefse and krumkage.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Loras; one sister, Ida Mae (Harold) Kuntz of Saint Olaf; one sister-in-law, Helen Meyer of Monona; one brother, Howard (Evelyn) Hanson of Culver City, Calif. and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Otto R. Hanson, Jr.
