TOWN OF GARBER SWEPT BY FIRE.
Loss Is Estimated At $75,000. To $100,000.The entire business section of Garber was wiped out by fire, which was discovered Wednesday shortly after noon. The loss is estimated at $75,000 to $100,000, partly covered by insurance.
It is thought the fire originated in the M. J. O'Connor blacksmith shop. Mr. O'Connor returning from his noon meal shortly after 12:00 o'clock discovered a blaze in his shop and immediately turned in the alarm. As the town is without fire protection every citizen turned out and volunteered to fight the flames. A high wind was raging at the time and this was largely due to the spreading of the fire, and the citizens were unable to check the flames. Calls for assistance were sent to Edgewood and Colesburg, but apparatus from those towns arrived to late.
The following buildings were destroyed:
The Farmers Savings Bank
O'Connors Blacksmith Shop
Grafs' Restaurant
Schnepfs' Store and House
Artie Schnepfs' Home
Chas. Zittermen Home
Strube's Blacksmith Shop
Schnepfs' Ice House
Elkader Light and Power Co.'s poles and wire and other material belonging to the Company.Elkader Register, Thur., 09 Feb. 1922.
