Golden Wedding
On Monday, March 22nd, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schwartz, of Volga twp., quietly celebrated their golden wedding, the 50th anniversary of an important event in their lives. Owing to the absence of their church at Littleport and the unfavorable weather their plans were not all entirely carried out as they wished.

Mr. and Mrs. Schwartz were born and raised in Schenhausen, Bavaria, Germany. They came to America over fifty years ago and landed at Dubuque. There being no railroads, they went up the Mississippi river by boat, landing at Clayton. From Clayton they came to Elkader, where a brother of Mrs. Schwartz was engaged in business. Here they remained for some time.

Two children were born to them, a son and a daughter, but their son, Joseph, died in Indianola, Nebr., ten years ago. Their daughter, Mrs. B. Farrell, resides with them. Most of their relatives live in Bavaria with the exception of several nephews, who reside in California.

Mr. and Mrs. Schwartz have lived and led a christian life, being strict adherents of that ancient faith that shines so eminently in their native fatherland, Bavaria, and more honorable and respectable pioneers Clayton county has never had.

Like the rest of the old settlers they have endured many hardships. It was in the days of long, cold and stormy winters, in the days of oxen teams, before railroads, churches or schools, when wheat and dressed hogs and other farm produce had to be hauled to McGregor and Dubuque, the trips had to be made through the entire night on the roads in the icy embrace of winter.

And now in these days the younger generation read the dailies in the long winter nights or talk over local and long distance wires. The younger and present generation does not realize and respect the heroic deeds and hardships the old pioneers endured in clearing away the forests and who made the country and civilization what it is today.

Mr. and Mrs. Schwartz have been honest, industrious and hard working people and peace and prosperity has attended them. They have been residents of Volga township for nearly half a century. It is the wishes and hopes of their neighbors and friends that they may live to see many many more anniversaries of their wedded life, and that happiness, good health and peace be with them forever while in this world and an eternal in the next.
