Early Settlers in Clayton Co.
A miscredit to a Clayton county item brings us the appended letter. We publish and pass it along to the Monona Leader and Guttenberg Press was good stuff for a half-column story:
—EDITORS DECORAH REPUBLICANI saw in the New Hampton Courier an item taken from your paper to the effect, that V. R. Miller, who came to Clayton Co. in 1848 was believed to be the oldest resident in that Co. I beg leave to differ with you. I have an uncle, Major Jenkins, who is 96 years old the 20th of this month, who has resided in Clayton county since 1844 or 1845. He lives in Guttenberg; also at Monona l have a brother who has resided in Clayton county since 1846. He is Geo. H. Jenkins, proprietor of the Monona brick yards. Our parents came to Clayton county Sept. 15, 1846.
Respectfully Yours,
MRS. JULIA A. ROBINSON
