Railroad accident - 1883

ROACH, RUEGNITZ, BRINKHOUSE

When near this place last Thursday morning, the north bound passenger train struck a rock which had fallen from the bluff, causing an accident which resulted seriously for some of the eight passengers in the car.

The engine struck the rock first, turning it nearer the track, and then the steps of the passenger car hit it, causing the car to leave the track. As it was so near the high trestle work, the engineer saw it would be impossible to come to a stop before the train would be on the trestle work, so he pulled across, and just after clearing the trestlework, the hind trucks broke, causing the car to roll over on its side.

Mrs. John Roach, of Volga City, had two ribs broken and was otherwise injured. The other passengers, among whom were Chas. Ruegnitz, of Clayton, and John Brinkhouse, of Mederville, escaped with slight injuries.
